I am a faculty member planning a field trip for my class
Drawing on Chicago's unique cultural resources is a wonderful way to reinvigorate your teaching and kindle your students' enthusiasm for the subject and for their education in general. Incorporating thoughtfully-selected field trips and accompanying assignments can help make abstract concepts tangible and relevant to students, and it can be a great way to break up series of class meetings.
It can be daunting to incorporate field trips into our semester plan, particularly if it is a new proposition. The purpose of this website is to point you toward materials that will help you with the preliminary preparation and successful execution of class field trips.
Because field trips should actively engage students in deep learning rather than passively use up class time, you are invited to consult and use the study guides, which are designed to provide students with opportunities to develop their critical thinking skills, especially analysis and synthesis. Students should complete study guides containing questions that will help them achieve the learning outcomes that you have set for them. You are welcome to use whatever parts of the study guide suit your needs and to delete or adapt any questions from the study guides that are not relevant to your class before sharing the study guide with your students. |
